For Grades 4-5
Math Puzzlers is a school-based math club intended to foster creativity and ingenuity in problem-solving and to inspire a love of math. It is based on the highly respected Math Olympiad program (www.moems.org). This program emphasizes problem solving skills, not drills. In general, teachers will focus on extending the math curriculum taught in school rather than reviewing it.
Weekly meetings consist of problem solving sessions or Math Olympiad contests. The program runs from 10/2/2017 – 5/21/2018. We will meet on Mondays from 2:45 to 4:00pm (room TBD), beginning 15 minutes after school ends to give time for a (parent-supplied) snack and bathroom break.
Who can participate?
All 4th and 5th graders can participate, especially if they like puzzles! Participants should have solid understanding of the mathematical concepts taught in school. Please make sure your child is really interested in joining for everyone’s benefit.
Family Participation is REQUIRED
We are still working with the school administration to determine whether we can get teacher support for Math Puzzlers as we have had in the past. We will determine the minimum number of volunteer hours required per family and update that information in the registration process. Possible ways to help include:
- Coaching during practice sessions
- Assisting during practice sessions
- Copying and distributing materials
- Monitoring competitions
- Grading contest
- Helping with annual “Math is Fun” celebration
- Purchasing snacks and prizes for events.
Volunteer sign ups will be sent out once the team is formed.
Enrollment and Fees
Online enrollment is on Thursday, Sept 14 @7:00am – 7:00pm. If the registrants exceed the max number of students, we will determine the enrollment on a lottery basis. Parents whose child can be enrolled in the program will be notified. At the time, a non-refundable registration fee of $120 needs to be paid via the PTA eStore. To complete the enrollment, the payment and required forms should be submitted on time.
Drop Out Policy
You are welcome to withdraw your child during the course of the year, but no refunds will be issued.

If the number of registrants exceeds the class size, half the spots will be allocated on a first-come-first serve basis and the remaining spots will be allocated on a lottery basis.
Parents whose child can be enrolled in the program will be notified by 10:00 pm Thursday 9/14. At that time, the non-refundable registration fee of$120 needs to be paid via the PTA eStore.
To complete the enrollment, the payment and required form should be submitted by 10:00 pm Friday 9/15.
If there are any open spots remaining after 10:00pm Friday 9/15, parents whose child can be enrolled from the waiting list will be notified and be required to pay by 10:00pm Tuesday 9/19.
